Why the elephants have got so big ears? Is that naturally?

well I don't think they have plastic surgery to get them so of course they're natural.
Why the elephants have got so big ears? Is that naturally?
They're not the result of a twisted human experiment so yes, they're natural. They evolved due to a mutation in the elephants genome, which produced the ears and turned out to be beneficial. They help to increase heat loss and the elephants can flap them against their skin to create a draught and cool themselves down. This mutation was so beneficial that it aided survival, they reproduced more, the genes for bigger ears became more frequent in the gene pool, and the elephants without big ears eventually died out.
Reply:its naturally. gods creation. elephants ears are used to get rid of flies surrounding them by flapping it. at he same time these ears are used for distance hearing.
Reply:So that they can hear better
Reply:The ears help keep them cool and yes its natural
Reply:yes
Reply:Natural selection.
Reply:Elephants have very large bodies and this can block the incoming sound so the ears are too big to collect the sound waves
Reply:Why have elephants got Big Ears?

Because Noddy won't pay the ransom of course.
Reply:Their ears does more than than what meets the eye.

Besides picking up low frequency vibrations...which they use to communicate among each other...it acts a radiator...their bodies get very hot so the blood rushes to the ears to get cooled...once cooled the blood returns to the body and more warm blood comes in their ears.

this is survival strategy in the desert.
Reply:An elephants ears are used to cool the elephant. The blood circulates in the ears, releasing heat as it's pumped through. If you notice that an elephant is constantly moving it's ears back and forth, this is to assist the cooling process.

African elephants spend more time on the open plains with more direct sunlight, therefore the bigger ears. Asian elephants spend more time in denser foliage, less sunlight, smaller ears.
Reply:To keep them cool. Hot blood flows into the ears, the ears flap %26amp; the blood cools then cooler blood leaves the ears to travel round their body.

Our ears the size they are don't do a good job keeping us cool, so I suppose you could say it's a design feature of an elephant!
Reply:..ears on African elephants serve a number of things..the epidermis is loaded with blood vessels and veins and artery's... it lets lots of blood be cooled by the air, that way..

..the size is also equiv to having a fan on ether side of the head..again, it's effective for maintaining body temps..

..they hear sounds other than what we can hear, and I'm sure the size of the ear is relative to there hearing ability's some way..

..incidental, if one 'tan's' an African elephant, and when 'monarking" the ear base, he is overly enthusiastic about removal of epidermal flesh, the ear piece keeps expanding ever larger as the wrinkles are shaved out...

..i worked an elephant hide once, and discovered that the hard way... [and obviously, an Indian elephant would not interchange..]

.. In and among an elephants many dramatically deep wrinkles there is much moisture as well..i assume that's what they relied on during drought times, and the most wrinkled places on them is that area behind the ears..
Reply:They live in hot countries and large animals have a small surface area in relation to their bulk so they find it difficult to cool down. Their skins are thick so they don't perspire which is the way we cool down and even if they did it would present problems because of water loss in the arid areas they inhabit..

One way to overcome the problem it is to have large ears (containing lots of blood vessels) which can be flapped about like fans.

Bit like the way a dog cools itself by sticking its tongue out and panting.
Reply:its a form of thermoregulation

they are highly vascularized and so lose heat quickly
Reply:because that's what makes them different
Reply:Yes
Reply:Elephants have large ears to help regulate their body temperature, blood is passed through the ears and elephants flap their ears almost constantly, this in turn cools the blood. African elephants have larger ears than the Indian elephant who spend more of their time in shaded jungle regions and are not subjected to the intense heat as much as he African elephants.

It is an evolutionary design...
