Why do African elephants have such large ears.?

The blood vessels are close to the surface in their ears, and when they flap their ears, it cools their blood, and the rest of them.
Why do African elephants have such large ears.?
Having large, thin ears, relative to the rest of the elephant, increases the surface area where heat exchange occurs.



Bonus! They're handy-dandy for swatting flies.
Reply:They are large because it increases the surface area where proper heat exchange can occur. It is beneficial to them because they live in a hot climate where this is important.
Reply:Elephants have large ears so they can flap them back and forth and they can scare away the bugs that bite them, and by "fanning" their ears back and forth it helps cool them off.
Reply:the extra surface hopes them cool off.
