Why do elephants have such large ears?

Because they just do...
Why do elephants have such large ears?
So that they can cool themselves by flipping their ears. They use them as a fan.
Reply:Born with them. Its part of their genetics just as we have ours.
Reply:Thermoregulation.
Reply:So they can fly!

Actually, I think it's to keep them cooler. There ears are quite thin, with lots of blood vessels near the surface, so they can lose lots of body heat through their ears.
Reply:The ears of an elephant keep it cool. There is a large supply of blood that goes through their ears and this keeps them cool.
Reply:Blood vessels run through their ears, as they move them it cools the blood. Its kinda like air conditioning for animals, Cool Huh
Reply:the warm blood flows to the ears and this cools over a wide area like the elephants ears thats why there so big no other reason other than this not used as fans or to hear you better
Reply:So they can hear mice from a long way away!
Reply:To keep them selfs cooler and it's sort of a fan for them, and also provides shade
Reply:to detract from the big nose.......
Reply:They are part of the heat exchange system for their large bodies - they need to be big.
Reply:To help Keep them cool. I think what happens is that blood is sent to their ears which can easily lose heat so that when it goes back to the rest of the body, it's cool again.
Reply:to cool themselves
Reply:to fly...Dumbo!
Reply:There are two types of elephants still living on Earth.

The African elephant has the bigger ears that are used as fans and as a radiator.

As for other types of elephants, I would like to see mammoths and mastodons cloned one day.
Reply:The better to hear you my dear.
Reply:All the better to hear you with!
Reply:Their ears are full of blood vessels this allows the blood to cool down like a radiator in a car does, and yes they can fan their bodies and also it helps funnel sound into the ears
