Elephants have the equivalent of a radiator or oil cooler in there ear structures - many small blood vessels close to the skin surface - Making a large surface area. They can divert blood to their ears for cooling. By flapping their ears they move more air over the surface to enhance the cooling effect. Their thick hide does not allow sweating so this is there replacement means of not overheating. Me? I prefer a cold beer!!!
Why do elephants flap their ears when its hot out?
There are lots and lots of small blood vessels in their ears. Elephants flap their ears to cool themselves. Elephants do not have sweat glands.
Reply:That's their cooling system working. Lots of blood vessels run through their ears. The cooled blood recirculates and cools their body temperature.
Reply:The same as some humans wave a magazine or a fan. Other animals hang their tongues out to cool off.
Reply:You pretty much answered your own question!
Reply:because they trying to fan they self
Reply:To cool them off.
Reply:They do it to cool off and keep those nasty bugs from off themselves.
Reply:I think they do that to cool themselves and to keep bugs away.
