Why elephants have big ears?

Because of Dumbo!...or not lol. Since it's so hot in the African plains, elephants need them to cool their head and bodies down. It helps them a lot, it also helps them detect very low pitched sounds that they communicate with, that even humans can't hear. Hope it helped, good luck...=)
Why elephants have big ears?
Primarily for thermoregulation. The ears have a very large surface area and are very thin, so the blood vessels in them are close to the surface, allowing heat to dissipate more rapidly than from other parts of the elephant's body. The elephant can also use water or mud to assist in cooling the blood flow through the ears.
Reply:to cool themselves with
Reply:For much the same reason dogs have big tongues. Their ears have a lot of small blood vessels close to the surace of the skin, and flapping them allows them to expel body heat as well as fan the rest of their bodies.
Reply:The enormous ears of elephants act as cooling devices

Larger the animal = larger the volume

Because they are large in volume, more heat is generated, surpassing the amount of heat that can escape through the surface area. Thus, they have other alternatives to balance their body temperature.
Reply:it helps to cool themselves
Reply:So you have something to grab when riding them.
Reply:its a good way for them to cool themselves down as well as the blood running through there body
Reply:The skin in the ears is very thin compared to the rest of the elephant. It provides a large surface area for blood vessels, and allows the elephant to cool itself more efficiently.
Reply:because where they live its hot so they use their ears to fan themself.
Reply:so they can fan themselves in the heat.
Reply:For heat loss/cooling and too hear the below our hearing sounds they make for communicating across long distance
